The dao, similar to the European saber, was the weapon most commonly used by ancient Chinese infantry. Some dao have a longer handle and a shorter blade, and were brandished in lethal ways on the battlefield.
Similar to the jian (sword), the dao was carried by many dignitaries and officials in ancient China and signified a certain status in society.
